Needless to say, this year's Tribute is shaping up to be the best ever.Since "43" (1943), the YMCA has been serving kids and families in San Diego's most critical community. Known as the Southeast YMCA until the mid 70s, during a period of racial unrest the students of <a href="https://www.sandi.net/lincoln" target="_blank">Lincoln High School</a> two blocks away led an initiative to honor Jackie by renaming our branch to the <a target="_self" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/about-us.html">Jackie Robinson Memorial YMCA</a>.If you've been sitting in a movie theater for the past six months watching upcoming preview trailers prior to your feature flick, when <a href="http://42movie.warnerbros.com/" target="_blank">"42"</a> appeared on the bigger than life screen - how did you feel? People I know and many I don't have been calling, emailing, and texting wanting to know "Did you know?", "Have you seen?", and a unanimous "I can't wait!" I've heard about "chills", "emotions", and "tears". Imagine if there was ever a time in your life when you've gone to "Jackie Robinson".This year our Y celebrates it's seventieth anniversary. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History announced the second week of February to be 'Negro History Week'. This week was chosen because it marked the birthday of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Woodson created the holiday with the hope that it eventually be eliminated when black history became fundamental to American history." ~Wikipedia<a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.473682212681559.98292.105485089501275&amp;type=3" title="Go here for action photos from the Ques vs. Nupes big game!" target="_blank"></a><a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.473495929366854.98259.105485089501275&amp;type=3" title="Go here for BAPAC Breakfast Photos!" target="_blank"></a>The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA has always worked hard to insure the original intent of Woodson that black history is never anything short of American history, especially in our Southeastern San Diego service area and throughout the region every day.On Saturday, February 23, the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.473495929366854.98259.105485089501275&amp;type=3" title="Go here for photos from this very special event!" target="_blank">Black American Political Association of California (BAPAC) San Diego Chapter hosted their 4th Annual Black History Month Breakfast</a> in our gymnasium. Over three-hundred attended. This very special event was followed by the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.473682212681559.98292.105485089501275&amp;type=3" title="Go here for photos from the big game!" target="_blank">1st Annual Battle for Basketball Supremacy featuring Da Ques from ΩΨΦ vs. Da Nupes from ΚΑΨ. </a>Growing up in Detroit, I had constant reminders of black history and those making history every day. I also learned that the history makers in my life were not always those icons elevated and celebrated today. I stand on their shoulders and thank God every day for how they served others and helped direct my path and influence how I use my head, heart, and hands today. When I left my hometown to become an assistant basketball coach at San Diego State in 1980, Detroit was home to 754,274 black Americans.It quickly became obvious that was not the case in San Diego.<a href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/lib-local/assets/Screen%20shot%202013-02-23%20at%205.04.03%20AM.pdf" title="Go here for more complete details." target="_blank"></a>The 2010 census report revealed only 166,840 blacks in a San Diego Region of 3,211,721. Twenty-four percent reside in the neighborhood communities of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA but those 40,363 are only fourteen percent of the 272,355 residing in our service area. This only heightens how much I value and appreciate those that work hard to insure black history is never an after thought in February and every month of the year.<a href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/lib-local/assets/My%20Dear%20Mr.%20President.pdf" title="Go here to read Jackie Robinson's Letter to the President." target="_blank"></a>Jackie Robinson is always one of those "heroes" worshiped at this time of year. For some reason, I would suspect he would prefer his success be used for significance. On April 12 the movie 42 about his life will be released. The Robinson Family can't say enough about the authenticity delivered by Legendary Entertainment producer Thomas Tull. Presenting the Invocation was fellow Club 33 Rotarian and retired United Methodist minister, my friend Reverend Mark Trotter, who served twenty 
four years as Senior Minister of the First United Methodist Church of 
San Diego, located in Mission Valley. I know Reverend Mark impressed our delegation with this blessing.             <title>I feel great!</title>

            <description><![CDATA[<a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151006643107396.416253.582912395&amp;type=3" title="Go here to see beach run photos!" target="_blank"></a>On October 27, 2012 I hit an interesting milestone. After my <a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151006643107396.416253.582912395&amp;type=3" title="Photos from my beach run!" target="_blank">Saturday morning run from the South Mission Jetty to Tourmaline Beach and back</a>, I stopped by the Y to pick up a few items. Then I went into the Wellness Center to step on the scale.For the first time in thirty years, I now weigh less than two-hundred pounds!<a href="http://www.forksoverknives.com/" title="Learn more about Forks Over Knives!" target="_blank"></a>If you've been following my fitness journey on <a href="http://www.facebook.com/mbsandiego" title="Follow me on Facebook!" target="_blank">my Facebook page</a>, it all began last fall watching Cornell University nutritionist <a href="http://www.tcolincampbell.org/" title="Learn more about Dr. Campbell!" target="_blank">Dr. Colin Campbell </a>being interviewed on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher. He was promoting the soon to be released documentary <a href="http://www.forksoverknives.com/" title="Learn more about Forks Over Knives!" target="_blank">Forks Over Knives</a>. I wasn't paying much attention while waiting for the show to begin, then I heard the good doctor say something that sounded like "there's no species known to man that drinks another species milk."At that time, I could have easily said, "My name is Michael, and I am a milkaholic."Let's not stop there. My weight was 245 pounds. My waistline was 38 inches and everything was fitting tight. I just didn't feel good and frankly wasn't doing anything about it. Obscene eating habits. There wasn't a fast food drive-thru that was not fair game for me. Crazy portions at all hours of the day and late into the night. No exercise. I was taking care of business on every other front, except for the one that addressed my personal health.Thank God for <a href="https://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Forks_Over_Knives/70185045?ca_source=gaw&amp;ca_pos=1t1&amp;ca_cid=31422793539&amp;ca_agid=4595972964&amp;ca_adid=16564936164&amp;ca_chid=2001704&amp;mqso=80013955&amp;gclid=CLTOwdKCorMCFcKPPAod-kMAzQ" title="Watch Forks Over Knives on Netflix!" target="_blank">Netflix</a>. I love watching movies. On, Netflix practically every documentary ever made is there for the viewing. Last November, <a href="https://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Forks_Over_Knives/70185045?ca_source=gaw&amp;ca_pos=1t1&amp;ca_cid=31422793539&amp;ca_agid=4595972964&amp;ca_adid=16564936164&amp;ca_chid=2001704&amp;mqso=80013955&amp;gclid=CLTOwdKCorMCFcKPPAod-kMAzQ" title="Watch Forks Over Knives on Netflix!" target="_blank">I watched Forks Over Knives</a> for the first time. After doing so, I set out to eliminate dairy, meat, fried food, and sugar from my diet. I started walking the dog 2.86 miles through the neighborhood at least once a day until I began to get the urge to begin running again. In the beginning, it might have been from one light pole to the next. When I felt confident my heart would not jump out of my chest, I started running all flat and downhill portions of the route while walking up hill.That was it for our dog Buffy!<a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150570025227396.374478.582912395&amp;type=3" title="I've been to the (Cowles) mountain top!" target="_blank"></a>The moment of truth finally came while at the intersection of Jackson and Navajo. Instead of turning right down Navajo to return home, I turned left and started running .6 miles to <a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150570025227396.374478.582912395&amp;type=3" title="I've been to the (Cowles) mountain top!" target="_blank">Cowles Mountain</a>, then 1.5 miles up to the summit. Mission Trails Regional Park is my backyard view. We have lived in this community since 1980 and I might have made the climb only once or twice while looking at Cowles Mountain every day. Now, this has become a Sunday morning pre-worship ritual before heading to the 11:00 a.m. service at St. Therese Catholic Church. In addition to breaking the 200 pound target goal my waistline is now at 34 inches.<a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150790956752396.391984.582912395&amp;type=3" title="What a blessing to reach this milestone!" target="_blank"></a>When our youngest of five was born, I remember telling Maria two things. The first words out of my mouth were <a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150251995372396.326644.582912395&amp;type=3" title="...and baby, look at her now!" target="_blank">"she's a beautiful baby."</a> Right behind that observation came this, "when she graduates from high school I will be sixty." My father was called to be with the Lord at age fifty-six. On the 10th of May I turned sixty. <a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150790956752396.391984.582912395&amp;type=3" title="Blessed to see this!" target="_blank">On June 12, 2012 Marianna graduated from Patrick Henry High School.</a>Our family has always been envious of children with grandparents in their lives. My mother passed away in 1999. She was the last surviving grandparent to Maria, Michael, Mario, Michelle, and Marianna. Now keep in mind, I don't know what the future holds but I know who holds the future. While God has a plan for all of us, I can't help but think how blessed I would be to be around when Marianna is 38 years old. I would need to be eighty. God willing, I would be 100 years old when she turns fifty-eight.For some reason, I am convinced without a healthy diet and some measure of exercise; obesity, hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, cancer, and other preventable diseases will get in the way of my ability to spend my heaven doing good on earth. Oddly, I can't begin to tell you how often I am asked "Are you okay?" by those that have noticed the obvious weight loss.             <title>The Summer Before 9/11</title>

            <description><![CDATA[<a href="http://aaugirlsbasketball.org/" title="AAU Girls Basketball"></a>During the summer of 2001, a group of girls and family members from the 
Jackie Robinson Family YMCA advanced to the Amateur Athletic Union 12 
&amp; Under National Basketball Championship in New Haven, Connecticut. 
Most of the team had never been on an airplane or outside the state of 
California.My then eleven year old daughter Michelle was on the 
squad that I coached along with Mark Palmer, the father of Brittany. 
Since 1990, I had been taking teams from San Diego to these age division
 championships where over one-hundred teams converge from all over the 
United States. In the beginning, it was so easy to get consumed with 
nothing but basketball. On some days the team could play up to three 
games in one day.Then it became pretty obvious that eleven and 
twelve year old girls wanted to do more than play basketball and eat at a
 nice restaurant. Trips to Orlando, Cincinnati, Kenner (near New 
Orleans), Ogden, Grapevine (near Dallas), Clovis (NM), and Huntington 
(WV) would always include an honest effort to find something unique for a
 San Diego girl to write home about. So, what do you do in New Haven, 
Connecticut? Many of the games were played on the campus of Yale 
University so we probably walked every inch of the campus.Judge 
Frank Devaney's (Kaitlin's father) accent left no confusion where he was
 raised. Once we learned our playing schedule, our travel party 
scheduled trips to the closest train station to catch a ride to New York
 City's Grand Central Station. Trip Number One was a ride/walk (long) to
 Madison Square Garden to watch the WNBA New York Liberty in action 
against the Detroit Shock. Trip Number Two saw a return to GCS, but this
 time we all purchased unlimited subway passes and went anywhere you 
could go from Central Park to Greenwich Village and down to the harbor 
area where we climbed on board to catch a breathtaking view of Manhattan
 and the Statue of Liberty. Trip Number Three was to Broadway for the 
the award winning production of Blast with tickets compliments of the La
 Jolla Playhouse. I am sure if you asked the girls today, nobody
 could remember anything about the games we played even though we won 
more than we lost. But for everyone involved those trips to NYC will be 
hard to forget.Two months later as we all watched the attack on 
the World Trade Center in disbelief, fourteen girls from San Diego and 
another twenty in our travel party knew exactly where this was because 
one day in July of 2001 we walked in the shadows of the Twin Towers on 
our way to the harbor tour. Somewhere I have a videotape zooming in on 
the window washers and the incredulous comments from the girls talking 
about how cool the huge WTC sky scrapers looked.The North Tower 
(1) was completed in December 1970 and the South Tower 
(2) was finished in July 1971. It's beyond imagination how many saw the 
same view we witnessed that day over those thirty years making it so 
easy to understand the affect of 9/11/2001 worldwide to those that lost a
 glimpse.But it's a drop in the ocean compared to those that 
lost loved ones on September 11, 2001 and beyond when our whole world 
changed. We are all survivors of this violent loss which makes losing a game so trivial compared to the lives lost on this day in 2001.Here's a brief update on the Jackie Robinson Family

            <title>The Greatest Loss of All</title>

            <description><![CDATA[<a title="Find out more!" target="_self" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/programs/tournaments/blacktop-classic.html"></a>In small towns, urban ghettos and upscale suburbs, children are being lost to the death, the drugs, and the destruction associated with youth gangs. And the loss of every youngster leaves families with a lifetime of grief and anger.One of the great things about sports is in the end you walk away a winner or a loser. When you keep score, the final tally easily identifies who gets the a ”W” and who gets the “L”. No confusion, and in most cases, quite pain-free too.Through this experience, other indicators emerge. “Personal Best” and “How You Played the Game” are examples of determining whether or not you are winner or a loser. Some youngsters learn these lessons at home, others through the responsible adult supervision that accompanies many youth sports experiences. Still, others learn this lesson on the streets, from positive role models both young and old.So you can understand how trivial losing a game can be compared to youngsters that lose their youth to the death, the drugs, and the destruction associated with youth gangs. Seldom do you walk alone in your victories and defeats. Others share the joys and sorrows, the ups and downs experienced by every child, making the gang related losses more dramatic when you consider that most get involved in gangs because they were bored or had nothing else to do.It sounds so simple, but it really gets complicated to join a team and not a gang. Every child does not have the opportunity to have legitimate access to neighborhood sports facilities. Most can’t afford participation fees. The shortage of responsible adult volunteers makes it tough to stage youth sports activities in areas that need the most intensive programs.Ironically, it doesn’t take much for a youth gang to get the ball rolling. However, the price paid by that boy or girl and their family, in the end becomes very costly.When a child becomes hardened and committed to crime, exposed to and addicted to drugs and alcohol, physically injured, scarred or murdered; that indeed is the greatest loss of all. Kids should be recruited to teams, equally as hard as they are recruited to gangs. And when they join, it is everyone’s job to hold on to them.<a title="Find out more!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/programs/tournaments/blacktop-classic.html"></a>For these kids, winning and losing could mean the difference between life and death. In these terms, winning is important. Sports contests are great, but the world needs more winners in the biggest game of all, THE GAME OF LIFE!As

            <description><![CDATA[There's no doubt in my mind, Thomas W. Brunker, Jr. would not have any 
difficulty explaining the meaning of Memorial Day long before <a title="Go here for Memorial Day." target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Day">Wikipedia</a> made it easy - if you were really interested. My father was called to be with the Lord on May 26, 1981. It was the day after Memorial Day that year and Maria and I were preparing to travel back to Detroit to have him see his first grandson who was born earlier that month. It seemed there were two topics at every discussion we had. The first spun out of his 19 years of service in the U.S. Army and how he entered at age 16 in 1939 for portions of WWII and Korea. The second sounded like "Son, I want you to go to college so that you can have a better life than mine." So, I did. By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars.At the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA, we have been served by so many men and women who certainly will be spending this day remembering those who died while serving with them in the Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy.             <title>I have been to the mountain top!</title>

 1982.  Our oldest was four years old and I was carrying our 
less than a
 year old son in a baby back pack.  So today, the spirit moved me to 
walk 2.6 miles to Cowles Mountain in 
Mission Trails Regional Park and 
give it another try.  Elevation is 1,593 feet at the summit that's 1.5 
miles from the intersection of Navajo and Golfcrest Roads.  Along
 the 
way to the top I saw legendary high school basketball coaches Wade

the top I
 see a Ben &amp; Jerry's umbrella.  Ephraim, the owner of the Seaport 
Village store was giving out free samples with his team.  I reminded him
 that he was a part of the Ben &amp; Jerry service project that built 
the front entrance and planted the trees at the Jackie Robinson Family

mountain 
trail and can't begin to tell you how many people were making the trek.

that I knew was former San Diego Charger and Miami Dolphin star Dick 
Westmoreland who has been a longtime friend of the Jackie Robinson 
Family YMCA.  The 71 year old let me know he makes this hike two or

accomplished 
this today if I had not watched Forks Over Knives five months ago on 
Netflix.  Since that time I have radically changed my diet habits, lost 
weight, and started getting more active for the health of it.  After

But that's not all. In addition each board member was asked to make their personal pledge towards our <a title="Read more about Safe At Home!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/about-us/alliance-partners/statewide-park-program.html">$16M SAFE AT HOME Capital Campaign</a> to build a new YMCA at our current location. The Board of Management commitment to date is $347,800. All understand it is impossible to ask anyone for a gift if we do not make our personal pledge.Like our namesake Jackie Robinson, the YMCA puts as much importance on 
character values as on physical skills. Our programs incorporate lessons
 on Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, offering our kids a place 
to grow, and our families a place to belong. None of this would be possible without the incredible gifts of time, treasure, and talent of so many advocates, donors, and volunteers.  Please make

            <description><![CDATA[Our Y is hosting it's annual <a style="font-weight: bold;" title="Go here for details!" target="_blank" href="http://www.facebook.com/events/279065108817138/">Membership Month</a>. Lots of activity, information, and an opportunity to sign-up with the joining fee waived today and throughout the month of January. While the Y has been about youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility for over 160 years in the USA; I have personally made an increased effort over the past sixteen weeks to be mindful of what I eat while exercising more for the health of it.The results have been pleasing - and noticeable on a number of fronts.<a title="Find out more about our next Zambastic Zumbathon!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/events/zumbathon.html"></a>I now weigh thirty pounds less and have knocked several notches off my belt line. In addition to simply feeling better, it's always affirming to have others acknowledge the progress. Sixteen weeks ago, there was no way I could lasted three minutes.             <title>The Power of Pa Rum Pum Pum Pum</title>

            <description><![CDATA[So, I get a call from Peggy Cooper letting me know I will be getting a call from her mentee at the San Diego Regional Airport. Peggy explains, "Tyra is from Detroit and I told her you were from Detroit and she needs to get involved in the community." After playing a serious game of phone tag, we finally connect. I joked with her about going to Cass Tech High School. I helped coach Birmingham Brother Rice High School to a Michigan State Basketball Championship in 1974. We beat Cass Tech in the final long before she was born.We finally met for lunch on August 17. Believing that good questions are often far more powerful than answers, I start firing away. It sounds so simple, but I simply asked "Tyra, what did you do after Cass Tech?"I quickly learned about how she attended Grambling State University. Here comes another. "How did you get to Grambling from Detroit?" She answered "they gave me a scholarship." Immediately, I jump to the conclusion "what sport did you play?"<a title="VIEW: Photos from the 2011 Moved By Music Winter Icebreaker!" target="_blank" href="http://on.fb.me/MovedByMusicDrumline2011WinterIcebreaker"></a>Tyra laughed and said, "well I did play sports in high school, but my scholarship was for 'The World Famed Grambling State University Tiger 
      Marching Band' otherwise known as the best band in the land." Quote unquote. She explained how she was a member of the drumline.I replied, "I have always wanted to start a drumline program at our Y."Less than four months from the time Tyra and I met for the first time, the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA Community Show Band Drumline debuted their <a target="_self" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/events/moved-by-music.html">2011 Moved by Music Winter Icebreaker</a> on December 10. This event showcased our new, year-round, southern style drumline.  
From high step marching, percussion technique, visuals, and movement; 
the intent of the show was to draw the community into the program and bring a greater interest from youth.And it did!Thanks to Tyra, through the power of Pa Rum Pum Pum Pum (or the power of one), she has managed to recruit the participants, secure the funding, and start a program that will be one we will be talking about for years to come. It's that spirit of volunteerism that makes a big difference for kids and families every day at our Y.P.S.             <title>Halloween at the YMCA</title>

            <description><![CDATA[<a title="Go here for Halloween at the YMCA details!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/events/halloween-carnival.html"></a>Over 2,000 kids of all ages are attended our annual Halloween at the YMCA Carnival. None of this would be possible without hundreds of donors and volunteers that join our daring staff in providing families a safe and fun place to go to on Halloween night.This is a big event for our Southeastern San Diego community.While walking our dog Buffy this morning, I could not help but think how excited the kids in our  neighborhood will be on this Halloween Night. Homes have been in theme for over a week now. Meanwhile, back at our Y we will be introducing "The Haunted Trail" this year and I am excited the weather forecast is promising clear skies.Suddenly, the thought of sidewalks filled my mind.<a title="Go here for Halloween at the YMCA details!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/events/halloween-carnival.html"></a>You see, where I live in the Knolls of Del Cerro we have sidewalks that were installed by the Sapper Construction Company in 1971.<a title="Go here for Halloween at the YMCA details!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/events/halloween-carnival.html"></a> In fact, during the past month, the two cul-de-sacs in our remote neighborhood just had ADA compliant corners installed (two at the entrance to each one - total of four).We moved into our home in 1981 and we have been in the Trick or Treat business for thirty years. The youngest of five is now seventeen and she will be hitting the sidewalks tomorrow night, making it kind of hard to understand why kids and parents pushing strollers around our Y can't enjoy the same (hit the sidewalks) in 2011.A quick look at the photo below will show how a walk down the street could be an adventure in the vicinity of Imperial Avenue and YMCA Way/45th Street. It's a safe bet that there are other neighborhoods facing the same sidewalk and street light conditions. In the light or at night, pedestrians heading to the YMCA, Lincoln High School, Gompers Academy, Porter Elementary, Greenwood Memorial Park, Imperial Marketplace, and the Educational Cultural Complex face this challenge every day, giving true meaning to a safe Halloween at the YMCA for kids and families in San Diego County's most critical community.<a title="Go here for Halloween at the YMCA details!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/events/halloween-carnival.html"></a>Rest assured, sidewalks or not, we will be packed on October 31 for our annual Halloween at the YMCA.             <title>Making moves to Canton, Ohio</title>

            <description><![CDATA[I've never been to Canton or Cooperstown. In 2008, I went to Springfield for the first time when my old boss Dick Vitale was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. When you play these games - football, baseball, and basketball; Canton, Cooperstown, and Springfield mean something.In June, I received an invitation from Marshall Faulk to join family and friends for his enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Now, I can add Canton to the list.<a title="Go here to learn more about the Marshall Faulk Foundation!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/about-us/alliance-partners/marshall-faulk.html"></a>I came to San Diego in 1980 to coach basketball at San Diego State. I left the sideline in 1987 and started the San Diego Regional Police Athletic League. Al Luginbill was the assistant AD before being promoted to head football coach at SDSU. He approached me about an idea called “Fill the Murph” where they would sell season tickets to Aztec games and they would donate them to our TAKE FIVE Tickets for Kids Program. The first year, I received 4,500 season tickets to distribute to kids and families in San Diego Counties most critical community.While sitting in the nose bleed section, the first game we attended was SDSU vs. Pacific when Marshall set the NCAA rushing record.Needless to say, we did not receive the same number of tickets during his sophomore season. The businesses who were buying the seats were now keeping them to watch Marvelous Marshall!<a title="Go here to learn more about the Marshall Faulk Foundation!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/about-us/alliance-partners/marshall-faulk.html"></a>Fast forward to 2009 when the Marshall Faulk Foundation relocated to San Diego. I get a call wanting to know if we would want to be a beneficiary of his philanthropy. On his first visit to our Y, I learned he was a Y kid growing up in New Orleans. leader."During the past month, God has called three of His "good and faithful servants" that have literally spent their heaven doing good on earth long before I met them for the first time. Each, in the words of Blanchard and Hodges, "considered their position as being on loan and as an act of service, looking beyond their own season of leadership to prepare the next generation of leaders."<a title="Read more about Community Leader Debra Stephens." target="_blank" href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/may/24/community-leader-debra-stephens-committed-to-youth/"></a>Debra &amp; Duane Stephens did not have children of their own, but throughout Deb's week long celebration of life during the end of May, it was clear she never hesitated when it came to raising up the children of San Diego County's most critical community, starting with those attending her alma mater - Lincoln High School. While she was being remembered for all she did to affect the lives of so many young people over the years, I could not help thinking about all the time she spent serving the elders of our community. The venerable Rev. Dr. George Walker Smith of The Catfish Club would tell you Debra Stephens was "his right hand, left hand, and the glue that held his operation together for a long, long time." <a title="Read more about Community Leader Debra Stephens." target="_blank" href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/may/24/community-leader-debra-stephens-committed-to-youth/"></a>I will never forget meeting "The Great" Preston Davis and a lovely lady by the name of Edith Anderson at a San Diego Padres Community Leaders Recognition Night at Qualcomm Stadium in 1997. At the time, I was representing the San Diego Regional Police Athletic League. Preston and Edith were wearing bright red jackets. I inquired who they were representing and they spent the rest of the evening (our seats were next to each other) proudly letting me know - "we represent the Y's Men International Club at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA." I learned about all their trips around the world and how they served the Y as volunteers and fundraisers. The next time I saw Edith, Debra was there. The last time I saw Edith, Debra was there. Cohen, the Executive Director of the <a title="Go here to learn more about the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center." target="_blank" href="http://www.lfjcc.org/">Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center</a> 
wanting to know if I could use a bus.  He was quick to point out that 
the exterior needed a lot of work and we would need to get it started 
since it had not moved for quite some time, but there was a couple on 
his board that were adamant about finding a good home for this "special"
 vehicle. I stopped by the JCC to check it out and was amazed 
about what I saw inside the bus.  While the Jewish Community Center was 
undergoing capital improvements, the bus served as a "Mobile Academy" 
for the JCC kids including the ones from Julie &amp; Lowell Potiker's 
home.  We were able to get the bus started and to the Y.  Then, a number
 of friends including but not limited to Colored Ink, Southeast Rotary, 
San Diego Transit, and Rachel Robinson contributed time, treasure, and 
talent to completely renovate the vehicle into the <a title="Go her to see photos of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA Mobile Academy." target="_blank" href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.192516374131479.44883.105485089501275&amp;l=27b2886106">Jackie Robinson 
Family YMCA Mobile Academy</a> that travels to our nine before and after 
school sites and communities that do not have technology.All of 
this because Julie &amp; Lowell Potiker felt it would be better to find a
 home for this old bus in need of some TLC.  The Potikers stopped by to 
visit our Y before finalizing the contribution and it was then that I 
learned more about why we have the Mobile Academy today.  Lowell's 
family is from my hometown of Detroit where his parents<a title="Read more about Philanthropist Sheila Potiker." target="_blank" href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/jun/20/philanthropist-admired-for-wisdom-business-acumen/"></a> Sheila &amp; 
Hughes founded the Entertainment Book.  Soon after, I would see how 
the transformational philanthropy of the Potiker Family Foundation had 
made a difference for so many served by the JCC, San Diego Maritime, 
Historical, and Art Museums, Senior Community Centers, and the La Jolla 
Playhouse - just to name a few. Sheila Potiker was called to be 
with God on June 13, 2011 (<a title="Read more about Sheila Potiker" target="_blank" href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/jun/20/philanthropist-admired-for-wisdom-business-acumen/">READ MORE</a>).  I thank God for her
 and Hughes spending their heaven doing good on earth and sharing that 
same spirit with their children and grandchildren. Because they 
did, thousands of kids in San Diego County's most critical community 
have climbed aboard the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA Mobile Academy since September of 2003 and logged online to the 
information highway limited only by their imagination thanks to this 
amazing gift from Julie &amp; Lowell Potiker.<a title="Read more about Aquatics Advocate Belinda Bencomo." target="_blank" href="http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/signonsandiego/obituary.aspx?n=belinda-bencomo&amp;pid=152198932"></a>Most days, I will read the online version of the San Diego Union-Tribune at SignOnSanDiego.com. Today, I found myself flipping pages of the print version when I reached the obituary section and learned that Belinda Bencomo passed away after a long battle with cancer at the age of 48. It has been years since we last saw each other, maybe fifteen or more. While I served with the PAL, she was the Aquatics Specialist with the City of San Diego Community Parks &amp; Recreation Division. The current economic conditions that always put municipal pools, recreation centers, and libraries on the chopping block is not unique to 2011. Belinda had an amazing way of turning obstacles into opportunities while leading everyone on a joyful journey to one solution after another.<a title="Read more about Aquatics Advocate Belinda Bencomo." target="_blank" href="http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/signonsandiego/obituary.aspx?n=belinda-bencomo&amp;pid=152198932"></a>Together the San Diego Regional Police Athletic League and Belinda's aquatics team joined forces to host a Championship Swim Meet for the community pool teams. Belinda was easily one of the go to advocates for aquatics safety and teaching kids to swim in this region. To put this in perspective, It
 is estimated that 33,000 children
 ages 5-12, who live in the service 
area of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA, have never taken swimming 
lessons to develop a healthy respect for the water. The pool at our Y was built before the municipal facilities at Memorial Recreation Center and Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center. Together, these three pools serve over 271,000 residents living in 72,000 households. Belinda helped me understand how critical it is in a coastal region like San Diego to teach kids how to swim by keeping pools open seven days a week all year round. In June, over three-hundred students from the King-Chavez Schools learned to swim over three-weeks at our Y. Belinda, these kids are for you.             <description><![CDATA[<a title="Go here to learn more about San Diego County Ford Dealers Salute to Education!" target="_blank" href="http://salutetoeducation.com/"></a>Tonight, the San Diego County Ford Dealers awarded $100,000 to one-hundred college bound high school seniors at their annual Salute to Education. Since 1998 2,101 college scholarships have been awarded to San Diego County high school seniors totaling $2.9 million.And there is more. At the end of the ceremony, Jasmine Hollis from Valley Center High School won a new Ford Fiesta.For the past five years, I have had the honor of being the keynote speaker at this wonderful event. I always look forward to shaking the hand of each recipient while asking the question, "What college will you be graduating from?" Pulling the name of the new car winner has always been fun.<a title="Learn more about Salute to Education" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/about-us/alliance-partners/salute-to-education.html"></a>I do a lot of public speaking. Often, I have no idea what I am going to speak about until I arrive and get a feel for the audience. Tonight was different.Last month, I joined members of the Salute to Education Advisory Council in evaluating close to 2,000 applications. Overall, I can't begin to tell you how these youngsters are excelling in the classroom and the community. Some have overcome incredible odds and are still finding ways to serve others. The letters of recommendation affirmed good character for all.When I looked out at the students tonight I noted, "I could be looking in the mirror."On Mother's Day in 1963, my mom won two cars just days after my eleventh birthday. The legendary Detroit Tigers broadcaster, Ernie Harwell, made her the lucky recipient of his and hers cars. White convertibles with fire engine red interiors, I could only dream that either the Plymouth Fury or Dodge Dart would be mine some day.Well, my father had a different idea. Earlier that year, after working 14 years for the Goebel Brewing Company, he and 3,500 co-workers lost their jobs when Goebel's went bankrupt. Suddenly my dad was working two or three jobs to support his family. Through that period, regardless of what else he did, he would always hang on to the mechanic job at the corner gas station. As soon as we took delivery of the cars, they ended up on the <a title="From the St. James High School Class of 1970 Yearbook" target="_blank" href="http://classic.motown.com/artist.aspx?ob=ros&amp;src=lb&amp;aid=52"></a>corner in front of the gas station with a For Sale sign on both windshields. The cars sold quickly and my parents used the earnings to buy their first home on Northlawn near Seven Mile leaving behind the house on Prairie I was raised in up to that point near Livernois and Fenkell.With this move came a new school, new friends, and a new discussion that talked about going to college. Melvin Franklin of the Temptations lived two houses from me. Every time he saw me, he would ask with his deep voice, "How are you doing in school?" During the rare times my father saw me, he would never stop saying, "Son, promise me you will go to college and get a degree so you can have a better life than mine."Easier said than done when he definitely did not have the income to support my college education. He must have asked everyone he knew to help send his first-born to the next level of education. Then, while taking his car to be serviced, he asked the dealer George Higgins if he could help. Last year, I discovered a Time Magazine article titled <a title="Read about George Higgins." target="_blank" href="http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,817209,00.html">The Senator's Hobby</a>. I learned Mr. Higgins had been sending kids like me to college since the year I was born in 1952.<a title="Read The Senator's Hobby - George Higgins" target="_blank" href="http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,817209,00.html"></a>When I graduated from the University of Detroit with degree in Political Science, I became the first in my family to make that claim. However, I would not be talking about it today without the philanthropy of George Higgins Pontiac on Woodward Avenue.How ironic that I can tell these stories to kids that received their scholarships from a car dealer here in San Diego; along with being able to show the impact of winning those cars after all these years.Appreciation makes most people feel better than anything you can give them. God knows, I have a lot to be thankful for and the Salute to Education Class of 2011 was challenged tonight to do the same by being winners in the biggest game of all - the game of life; and by spending their heaven doing good on earth.I pray God will continue to guide them to service before self, while remembering what Jackie Robinson once said, "A life is not important except in the impact it has

Living my first twenty-eight years in Detroit from 1952-1980 might have had a lot to do with it. It was there that I learned that Black History went far beyond the athletes, the celebrated, and the entertainers. So many of the "History Makers" in my life were those that simply took the time to look me in the eye and say anything that sounded like "Boy, let me tell you..."I thank God everyday that I listened to all of it. What usually followed were the "...when I was your age" or "...you don't know how good you have it" stories. Each one took me to a time, a person, place, or thing and left me with a memory without ever leaving my seat. These time traveler moments left a number of impressions and commonsense lessons about the importance of being thankful for what I have, not being afraid to work hard, why I should "eat the fish and throw away the bones" and "beware of snakes (because they bite)," and in the end why I should always return the Glory to God.<a title="Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Jackie Robinson. Many of our keynote speakers Have been recognized as "History Makers." Rev. Calvin Morris, Rev. Samuel "Billy" Kyles, Cecil Steppe, and Rev. It took another great performance by the Cougars to offset the Aztecs for the second time this season. This loss was only the second for the home team in 29 games played this season. While many mourned the defeat, I could not help but remember a team I helped coach in 1974, when <a title="Read more about the 1974 Brother Rice Warriors." target="_blank" href="http://www.facebook.com/home.php#%21/group.php?gid=111158512234503">Brother Rice High School</a> lost twice to Catholic Central in league play, then went on to finish 26-2 and win the Michigan State Championship - including a win the third time they played Catholic Central. <a title="Norman Powell and the Lincoln Hornets are the defending CIF State Champions. I will be in Las Vegas on March 12 to see San Diego State win the Mountain West Championship, but before that, I will be at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Friday, March 4 to see Lincoln High School defend their CIF San Diego Section Division II title at 8:00 pm. I will assure you that my grandmother, mother, father and countless relations taught me better manners, and all would be rolling over in their graves to think that I have taken so long to thank each of you for your kindnesses to me. I remember my mother and my grandmother also saying to me "Mousie [that's my nickname], people don't have to be nice to you, which is all the more reason why you should always thank them for their kindnesses."<a title="Rev. You were so gracious taking me to lunch, to dinner and meeting my every need, particularly because I continued to have some negative reactions to an earlier hernia surgery.Most of all I want to thank you for exposing me to San Diego, giving me the two or three hour tour of the city, and mainly allowing me to meet its many faceted people and to be inspired by their efforts to make the city a more amenable, welcoming, and more caring place for all of its people. And when I did, the thought that repeatedly came to mind was something my father preached long ago when he said, "Son, how you act when people are watching you is not nearly as important than how you act when nobody is watching."People have been watching our YMCA since 1943. The countless contributions of time, treasure, and talent of so many inspired volunteers and staff has made a difference in the lives of kids and families in San Diego County's most critical community for a long time.If you follow <a target="_self" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/yblog/executive-decisions.html">Executive Decisions</a> or <a target="_self" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/follow-us-on-facebook.html">our official Facebook page</a> chances are you are aware of all the news that did not make the news in 2010 - and there was a lot.We were blessed to learn last month that the <a title="Read about our $5M grant from the State of California!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/about-us/alliance-partners/statewide-park-program.html">State of California Department of Parks and Recreation, awarded $4,989,927</a> for our Teen &amp; Family Recreation Center project. This year, extreme make-over projects by hundreds of volunteers from <a title="See how The Rock Church Do Something World Ministry supports our YMCA!" target="_blank" href="http://www.therocksandiego.org/search/?x=jackie+robinson">The Rock Church</a> and <a title="Frito Lay Day of Service comes to our Y!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/volunteer.html">Frito Lay Day of Service</a> added some TLC to our aging facility until we build the new one planned for it's current location.What is most exciting about all the facility buzz is how many more kids and families will be served when the dust settles. Kids already love coming to the Y. Some come after school for homework help. Some come to play soccer, basketball, or for a swim in the pool. Arlene has been crossing Imperial Avenue since she was seven years old. Now she is working as an intern on Capital Hill after graduating from Northwestern University. Before leaving for Washington, D.C. Arlene ran our Cox Tech Center Tutoring Program sponsored by the Ford Motor Company.When it comes to helping kids graduate from college, failure is not an option. In April, our <a title="Read about the Jackie Robinson Tribute &amp; Scholarship Gala!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/events/tribute-scholarship.html">Jackie Robinson Tribute &amp; Scholarship Gala</a> awarded scholarships to it's <a title="Watch our 2010 scholar interviews!" target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1lDz30GJlM&amp;feature=player_embedded">fourteenth class of college-bound high school seniors</a>. Since the San Diego Padres helped launch the first tribute to Jackie Robinson in 1997 over 120 grants have been distributed <a title="Find out more about PrimeTime!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/programs/primetime.html"></a>through the lead of our beloved honorary chair, Jerry Coleman. Our strategic school partnerships continued to grow in 2010. <a target="_self" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/programs/primetime.html">The PrimeTime Before and After School Programs</a> at Audubon, Burbank, Fulton, and Rodriguez elementary schools grew to include the five campus King-Chavez Charter Schools where our Y has a full-time presence.And there is more.We are involved in a collaboration of principals, teachers, parents, students, and community leaders working with the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation in a partnership called The Diamond Learning Community. The collaborative represents eight schools (Chollas-Mead, Horton, Johnson, Knox, Porter, and Valencia Park Elementary Schools, Gompers Preparatory Academy, and Lincoln High School). Together, they are building a support network that nurtures the unique talents of students, unleashes their unlimited potential to learn, values diverse cultures, and embraces families through a pilot program called <a title="Read about Opening Doors!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jacobscenter.org/whatwedo_social_edu.htm">Opening Doors</a>. Opening Doors encourages culture of learning and directly supports the most disengaged students, their teachers, and families. Add the <a title="Read about Head Start!" target="_blank" href="http://www.neighborhoodhouse.org/programs/headstart.cfm">Neighborhood House Head Start</a> and the <a title="Read about the Sports Academy!" target="_blank" href="http://www.sdcoe.net/jccs2/?loc=south-sport&amp;m=1">San Diego County Office of Education Sports Academy</a> that are located at our Y it is safe to say there are a lot of little eyes watching.<a title="From the Ferndale St. James High School Class of 1970 Yearbook." target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/lib-local/assets/8729_166652097395_582912395_3290293_1464701_n.pdf"></a>Education has always been important to me. I was the first in my family to graduate from college. This year, I had the opportunity to return home to Detroit to attend my 40th high school reunion. It was great to see so many friends from school, and <a title="See photos from my coaching years!" target="_blank" href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=238583&amp;id=582912395">my coaching days</a> at Brother Rice High School, University of Detroit, and the Detroit Pistons; however, it was tough to see how the <a title="Big changes in Detroit." target="_blank" href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=238783&amp;id=582912395">miserable economic times have taken a huge toll on this once proud region</a>. In August, I was able to visit the <a title="Check out A New York Perspective." target="_blank" href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=14654&amp;id=105485089501275">Jackie Robinson Rotunda at the new Mets Stadium, the Harlem YMCA - where Jackie Robinson worked and served as a board volunteer, and the Jackie Robinson Foundation</a>, founded in 1973 as a vehicle to perpetuate the memory of 
Jackie Robinson through the advancement of higher education among 
underserved populations. 1,400 students from 43 states and the District of Columbia have 
benefited from the <a title="Read more about the Jackie Robinson Foundation!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.org/">Jackie Robinson Foundation</a>'s services.<a title="Read Jose Mercado's Y Story." target="_blank" href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/jul/09/program-drives-home-baseball-life-lessons-for/"></a>As we enter a new year, i can't help but think how many times I run across people who have a Jackie Robinson Y story. Some go way back to a time before I-805. Many now bring their kids to the place that was there for them when they were a child. History is important. Rev. Samuel Billy Kyles is the last surviving person that was in the Lorraine Motel room with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. before he stepped out on the balcony on April 4, 1968. Rev. Kyles spoke at our 25th Annual YMCA of San Diego County Human Dignity Award Breakfast this year. He <a title="Hear Rev. Samuel Billy Kyles at the 25th Annual YMCA Human Dignity Award Breakfast!" target="_blank" href="http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/5064244-words-from-rev-kyles-with-whom-dr-king-spent-his-last-hour-alive"></a>talked about being a witness to the dream.I had the opportunity to sit with Rev. Kyles at the airport before he departed from San Diego. It did not take long for me to understand that he was a survivor of violent loss. How do I know? <a title="Read In Honor of Courtney Graham." target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/yblog/executive-decisions/2010/7/26/to-honor-the-life-of-courtney-graham.html">Courtney Graham</a> was a 25 year old college student who worked at Comic Con and the Belmont Roller Coaster. He had been coming to our Y since the age of four. In July, Courtney was gunned down walking home with his laptop in his backpack. A few months later, another friend of our Y was shot and killed in the line of duty. <a title="In celebration of the life of Officer Chris Wilson." target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/yblog/executive-decisions/2010/11/4/about-this-time-one-week-ago.html">San Diego Police Officer Chris Wilson</a> chose to spend his entire seventeen year career in Southeastern Area Command that includes our YMCA service area. Two more candle light vigils helped support a grieving community, but to the families, the vigils will last a lifetime. Michelle Muhammad, the mother of Mikey Beckwith held one recently at Kennedy Park on the sixth anniversary of her son's murder. There was a table with pictures of thirteen neighborhood youth and young adults that have lost their lives to gang violence since Mikey died six years ago.So, if you are watching, if it has anything to do with youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility chances are you might find our Y involved.             <title>My Y Story: Rev. Amos Johnson, Jr.</title>

            <description><![CDATA[Service before self is an interesting concept.It seems so simple that you would think everyone would find it easy to contribute their time, treasure, and talent for the benefit of others. I am always humbled when I run across saints like Rev. Amos Johnson, Jr. that have been stepping up to serve others for thirty plus years at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA. So much of his foundation for Social Responsibility comes from childhood memories when others helped support his family making it easy to understand why giving back to his Y is so important.<a title="Go here to find out more about the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA Board of Management." target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/board.html"></a>My "Y" StoryI was brought up in San Diego in a family of 10 children and my parents struggled to make ends meet. I can remember one Christmas when my dad was out of work and we received food and toys from the Salvation Army. Despite that I never thought of myself as poor because I was always involved in sports and church activities which allowed me the opportunity to always be surrounded by great coaches and counselors. These caring adults gave me encouragement and direction.In January of 1974 I was asked to join the Jackie Robinson Board of Directors I accepted the offer as an opportunity to help young people find their way, just as I was helped when I was growing up in San Diego.In March of 1974 I became pastor of the New Creation Church. Shortly thereafter I approached the Jackie Robinson Y director about renting a space for our Sunday worship services. Thus began a wonderful relationship between the YMCA and New Creation Church.Our church was housed at the Y for five years. We held our worship services in the multi-purpose room and baptized our new members in the swimming pool. Our members became active in the various Y programs and participated in the annual support campaign.I am no longer pastoring the church but I am still on the Y board. I have maintained my position on the Board for the last 36 years because I believe that the Jackie Robinson Y is the best organization in southeast San Diego when it comes to helping our youth to reach their full potential as children of God.Rev. Amos Johnson, Jr.P.S. Though he did not mention it, Amos was a Y kid long before joining

            <title>What if every season was like Christmas?</title>

I do not need to go to far to see so many examples of individuals and groups giving to others. It might be time, it might be treasures, or it might be talent. <a title="San Diego Rotary Club Holiday Luncheon." target="_blank" href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=25266&amp;l=6a46fd9db2&amp;id=105485089501275"></a>They are not only giving, but - they are looking for those less fortunate to give to and that is good. During the past week, our Y brought a busload of active older adults to the annual San Diego Rotary Club Holiday Luncheon at the Sheraton Harbor Island Resort Hotel and another busload of nominated families in need of Christmas dinner groceries to the Chargers Defensive Lineman Giveaway.On the Saturday before Christmas, our Y distributed gifts to thousands of children that were lined up at our locked gate at 6:00 am when I arrived. The event did not begin until 9:00 am. Every year, I pray we will have enough gifts to insure every child is served. This year, I prayed that the storm predicted to begin on Saturday would hold off until we concluded and my prayers were answered. Santa), Sasha Knox (JRYMCA), and Hannah Wilder (Episcopal Diocese of San
 Diego).I did.While I was editing and uploading each, I could not help but watch these little eyes watching. I loved the interaction between our volunteers and the children from the time they stepped in line until their picture with Santa. Lots of smiles (and a few tears) for all. I could not help but think what it would take to insure every child in these pictures graduated from college.In my last message <a style="font-style: italic;" title="Read the Answer is Yes!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/yblog/executive-decisions/2010/11/25/the-answer-is-yes.html">The Answer is Yes!</a> I shared the story about the Marin Family that was involved in a terrible car accident. Denise Cooper and her family asked if they could once again adopt a family in need during the holidays and the timing seemed like divine intervention. Then, I received a call from another family that wanted to help. Tracy, Kaylee, and Conner Wilson the family of <a title="Read about Officer Chris Wilson." target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/yblog/executive-decisions/2010/11/4/about-this-time-one-week-ago.html">Officer Chris Wilson</a> called to let me know they wanted to help this family after all the support their family received from our community. And, the San Diego Police officers from the Southeastern Area Command helped Santa make a <a title="Read more about The Answer is Yes!" target="_blank" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/yblog/executive-decisions/2010/11/25/the-answer-is-yes.html"></a>special delivery to support them at this time. We are still looking for angels that might want to donate a bedroom set for the 8 year old twin boys and a mini-van or bigger to replace their car that was totaled in the accident.On Christmas day Suzy, Jesse, and their five children will join our family for Christmas dinner. Maria and I have lived in San Diego since 1980. All of our relatives are back in Detroit and this Christmas our three oldest children will remain outside Philadelphia, and in New York City, and Boston. My wife is the oldest of ten and has always talked about doing something like this.Imagine what the Christmas season would be like if everyone did something like this?Rev. Dr. John E. earth, in spite of the poverty, illness and problems that many of us 
face. We invite you to remember that Jesus is the reason for this
 season, and that with our constitutional freedom of religion—comes the 
right to believe in Jesus Christ and the declaration made in John 3:16: “For
 God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that 
whosoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” May
 the Spirit of Christmas and the promise of peace and good will rest

Our Y would not exist without gifts of time, treasure, and talent from so many that contribute when asked and unasked.This time of year always brings those unsolicited inquiries that result in some amazing blessings.A week ago on Thursday, November 18, our Y neighbor Marie Tuthill stopped by my office to return a basketball that had bounced over the fence to her construction company lot on the corner of YMCA and Imperial. The ball had the name of it's owner on it and she asked if we could return it to the youngster. Marie shared how she was helping support several Thanksgiving efforts around town and she asked about ours (The Turkey Project we hosted last year for the first time distributed 800 Thanksgiving Dinner grocery bags the Saturday before Thanksgiving in 2009).I told her it was not going to happen, then it did.Marie returned with a blessing that allowed us to go shopping at the College Grove WalMart for enough groceries to fill 100 Thanksgiving Dinner Bags thanks to Store Manager Rick Balke. Then within minutes Camille Bacus of the LaDainian Tomlinson Touching Lives Foundation called to let me know that L.T.'s former Charger teammate Terrell Fletcher would be taking over the big Thanksgiving Dinner grocery bag distribution at the WalMart on Broadway in Chula Vista and would we be able to distribute 250 vouchers for Tuesday morning.Waiting in the wings was the <a href="http://naepc.org/">National Association of Estate Planners &amp; Councils</a>. Eleanor Spuhler had been planning a community service project for twenty volunteers from all over the country that agreed to stay in San Diego on Saturday, November 20 after the conclusion of their national conference that week. Our discussion began months ago when we thought The Turkey Project would repeat on this date.The NAEPC volunteers stepped off the bus at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 20. After a brief briefing, they reviewed the <a title="Please take time to READ families nominated for The Turkey Project." href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/lib-local/assets/The%20Turkey%20Project%20-%20Nominations.pdf">800 nominations (READ HERE)</a> from 2009 and started calling families to come to the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA to pick up a Thanksgiving Dinner Grocery Bag or voucher to the Hope in the City event the following Tuesday. Around 10:30 a.m. the heavy lifters climbed the JRYMCA bus to go on the College Grove WalMart shopping spree. Turkeys, sacks of potatoes, stuffing, canned goods, pies, whipping cream, bread, etc.. were all loaded into number 1947 - in the rain. It was still raining when they arrived at the Y and unloaded the same, then started assembling the dinner bags. Everything was gifted by the time they left at 3:00 p.m. and before they left, NAEPC left behind a significant contribution to help support The Turkey Project.Today, 350 families will celebrate Thanksgiving thanks to these angels.Let me tell you about one of them.Suzy and Jesse Marin loaded their five children in the car after receiving the call and drove to the Y to pick up their groceries. If you looked up the word <a title="Watch more on APPRECIATION!" href="http://www.appreciationmovie.com/">APPRECIATION</a> in the dictionary you might find their picture right next to it. In between the thank yous and hugs I might have seen a tear or two.Jesse works at the <a href="http://www.jacobscenter.org/whatwedo_social_safety.htm">Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation </a><a href="http://www.jacobscenter.org/whatwedo_social_safety.htm">Coming Home to Stay</a>,  prisoner re-entry program. After unloading the family and groceries on Saturday, he received a call from a recently released prisoner living in El Cajon that was in need of food for his family.You know the rest.Suzy &amp; Jesse and the kids and the groceries were back in the car to help feed a family that could not wait <a title="Read Serious Crash blocks I-125" href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/nov/20/serious-crash-blocks-south-route-125-i-8-la-mesa/"></a>until Thanksgiving. On the return trip home with the rain falling harder now, Suzy was merging onto southbound I-125 from westbound I-8. <a title="Read Serious Crash Blocks i-125" href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/nov/20/serious-crash-blocks-south-route-125-i-8-la-mesa/">The front left tire had a blowout and forced the car loaded with the Marin Family into a roll over accident that left one of the 8 year old twins in critical condition.</a> Jesse broke his jaw and eye 
socket.  His head injury required surgery. His jaw is now wired shut his boy has a broken nose, he lost all his 
teeth and his eye was cut. He too had major surgery.Yesterday, I received this message:Hi Michael,How are you doing? Well, I’m checking in to see if you have a family for us to “adopt” for Christmas. Would love to have one about 4 to 6 people, if possible. No hurry, but please let me know if we can help someone.Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and holiday weekend!Denise CooperThe answer is YES!I called Suzy and Jesse last night to check in on their status and connect them with Denise. All have been <a title="Read Serious Crash Blocks i-125" href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/nov/20/serious-crash-blocks-south-route-125-i-8-la-mesa/"></a>released from the hospital and are working towards recovering from this devastating accident. During the call not once did I hear any despair about their condition. The car was totaled. There was no discussion about the injuries and trauma that will follow.  All I heard was an enthusiastic thanksgiving to God that their family is alive and what sounded like tears of joy when told about Denise's request.I think we've found a perfect fit for the Cooper Family!Thanks to all that give to help so many. He went on to let me know how much all involved in the decision making process shared the same opinion. They all believed that of the $138,000,000 allocated statewide our plan might have the best opportunity to get more return on the investment.The actual letter was faxed shortly after we concluded the big call. "Congratulations!" "Round One of the Statewide Park Program was intensely competitive and your project was one of 62 selected for funding from a pool of almost 500 applications!" "Welcome to the State Parks family of Proposition 84 grantees!"I love exclamation points!To date, I have received over 300 exclamation point emails. Give thanks indeed!! You are doing very good work there at the JRYMCA and you have been doing so for years. This is fruit of well planted seed, good soil, and hard work. Keep up the good job. This is just the tip of the first fruits breaking through the ground. A harvest is coming when this is faithfully executed, thoroughly documented and accurately reported.Rev. Wendell M. Bass Jr. added three more:I am so elated about JRYMCA receiving $5 million. God is so awesome and when we put the Father, Son and Holy Spirit first in our plans and ask in Jesus' name to bless them, He will always give you what you ask for. It will be done in God's time and not ours. The amazing piece is look what has happened in light of the horrible economy. However, God's economy never fails and He will supply our every need! This makes me even more convinced that God answers prayers and He blesses the work of His servants. You are truly a servant and dedicated to the cause of our communities' children and families.             <description><![CDATA[Everywhere I go I cross paths with so many that are sure to let me know about their connection to the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA. I have asked them to take a moment to tell their Y story. Here's what Janice Robinson had to say: <a title="Send your Y story today!" href="mailto:jackierobinson@ymca.org"></a>My “Y” Story Growing up in the Oakland bay area, the only YMCA was located in the downtown area, which was not convenient for me to attend. I knew of the activities the “Y” had for youth but I was able to find other activities through my church.Relocating to San Diego, the YMCA crossed my path once again via my late husband and 34 year Jackie Robinson board member, Raymond T. Robinson. He was very active with the “Y” and it’s aquatic program. In supporting him, I also became active with the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA and became involved in their programs.I first began by becoming a member of the “Y’s Men organization, a service club in partnership with the YMCA, and became very active with the youth that used the “Y’s” facility. When I became District Governor of Toastmasters International, I went to several YMCA’s in San Diego County and held public speaking workshops. By performing these workshops, I assisted the metropolitan YMCA to hold their first public speaking contest for youths which is now known as the Pride Program Public Speaking Contest.This contest showed me one can be of great service to the “Y” and youth in so many ways. It is not only your time or treasures, but your talents and skills which makes a difference in the lives of children attending the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA or any YMCA.Now I continue to support the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA by serving on the Board of Managers, and President of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA “Y Service Club (formerly “Y’s Men Club)”.This is my “Y” story and I am pleased to share it with you.Janice Marie RobinsonNow what's interesting about Janice's story is how many others go out of their way to let me know how important the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA is in her life.             <description><![CDATA[It was around 5:00 am when I heard the news that a police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty. As the details unraveled the caller Tasha Williamson said "we knew him."<a title="In memory of Officer Christopher Wilson." target="_self" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/events/candlelight-vigil.html"></a>What has happened since has been adequately chronicled. What has surprised most is how much the Southeastern San Diego community truly appreciated, loved, and valued San Diego Police Officer Chris Wilson. On Monday, November 1 an amazing candlelight vigil was held at Skyview Park next to the Southeastern Area Command of the San Diego Police Department where Chris served his entire seventeen year career. I was honored to participate in a very small way. This is what I said:There can be no greater loss than that of a loved one.You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give. Kaylee, you told the world exactly what your father did every day and how much he loved every minute of it. Tracy, you confirmed the same when you said Chris loved his job so much he would work for free. <a title="In memory of Officer Christopher Wilson." target="_self" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/events/candlelight-vigil.html"></a>And to the collective we here tonight, you and Chris have given all that you have because you believe in life and the bounty of life. Through your hands God has spoken, and from behind your eyes He has smiled upon the earth.When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight. Chris has been your needs answered. We have deepened each others spirit. We have filled each other’s needs, not emptiness with laughter and sharing of pleasures.Therefore let your visit to the temple be for nothing but ecstasy and sweet communion in celebration of the life of our beloved Chris.             <title>I read the news today, oh boy.</title>

The prolific member of The Beatles wrote many songs with Paul McCartney before he lost his life in December of 1980, but today the final track on the group's 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band seems stuck in my mind.While Lennon’s <a title="READ: A Day in the Life" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Day_in_the_Life">A Day in the Life</a> lyrics were inspired by contemporary newspaper articles, two headlines I read today touched me and many others in a significant way.<a title="READ: Hall of Famer Gwynn reveals cancer" href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/oct/09/hall-famer-tony-gwynn-begin-treatments-parotid-can/?padres"></a>I came to San Diego from Detroit in May of 1980 to coach basketball at San Diego State. Our 21 year old senior point guard on that team was Tony Gwynn. It is always a thrill to stay connected with players I have coached over the years and when it comes to Tony, let me say it has been a blessing. Out of college he was an NBA draft choice as well as the Padres top pick. Tony could have played either sport professionally. To watch his Hall of Fame career with the Padres has been special but the icing on the cake has been to watch him win on and off the field. Spiritually grounded and always committed to his family, Tony is a living example that character counts. Together with his wife Alicia there have been very few professional athletes anywhere that have given their time, treasure, and talent to improve the quality of life for so many. The unsolicited contributions they have made to support my career after SDSU with the PAL and Jackie Robinson Family YMCA have been significant and life changing for so many.Knowing Tony like I do, the last thing he will want is for anyone to feel bad for his condition. He has been battling this thing since 1997 like so many pitches he has fouled off the best pitchers before knocking one through the 5.5 hole. Keep Tony and the Gwynn Family in your thoughts and prayers that God will continue to elevate their spirit through this challenging time.<a title="READ: School Shooting Injures Two Girls" href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/oct/09/accused-school-shooter-described-angry-loner/"></a>If the news about Tony was not enough, this headline was above the fold and right below it.The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA serves a region where gun violence is all too common. This morning, while my wife was reading the article aloud downstairs, I am watching a seven-year old girl with tears running down her face being interviewed on TV talking about seeing the shooter coming on campus with a gun in his hand. The child remembered telling her friend, "this is not right we've got to go."Let me note this happened in Carlsbad, California.I have long been in search of an answer to the question, "What's Going on?" when I see examples like this that represent a total disregard for life. Though this shooter and the weapon are off the streets, it is little consolation to the victims of this trauma whose innocence has suffered a violent loss.Take time to check in with the kids in your life to find out how they are feeling about the news today.             <title>Going Home</title>

            <description><![CDATA[I am sitting in the Detroit Metro Airport waiting for my non-stop flight back to San Diego. Since returning home for my high school reunion (40th) last Tuesday night, everyday has been filled with family, friends, and memories of spending the first 28 years of my life in the Motor City.Along the way, someone observed "you have spent more than half your life in San Diego."What always amazes me is how you can return home and in many ways it's like you never left. Now, I will be the first to admit, I would be lost trying to get around without my Droid GPS and things have definitely changed. The house where I spent the first eleven years of my youth at 14830 Prairie is still standing, but there is not much more. I know it was a long time ago, but there must have been over twenty homes on our side of the block between Chalfonte and Eaton. Today, only six are standing - and three of those have been trashed and need to be demolished <a title="Going home..." href="http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#%21/album.php?aid=238783&amp;id=582912395">(GO HERE FOR PICTURES)</a>. Innelli's Grocery Store would be a good prop for Detroit 187.The public grade school (Clinton) where I went to kindergarten is closed and shuttered. The Catholic elementary school I attended from grades 1-5 closed many years ago and was converted to a charter school. The high school I graduated from closed the year after I graduated in 1970 and later became a charter school. Now, it sits empty.Driving anywhere south of 8 Mile is an amazing revelation of Detroit's unwelcome realities that my friend Mayor Dave Bing is facing head on every day. How this once great American city reached this condition is filling volumes. Not far behind is the can-do spirit that has even the worst of skeptics believing Detroit will rebound.But, it not just Detroit that is looking for a boost.I have never seen so many suburban restaurants, strip malls, office buildings, factories, etc. sitting vacant with For Sale signs out in front. So many people I talked to have lost their jobs after 20-30 years. One classmate/teammate talked about his current part-time $8.00 job. We are both 58 years old.The plane is getting ready to board and I will continue this later. My message this morning is simple: home is where the heart is.             <description><![CDATA["We start with children at birth and stay with them until they graduate from college."Geoffrey Canada from the Harlem Children's ZoneThe Lincoln High School Area 1 Cluster has plenty of Head Start and Elementary School programs but ZERO middle schools. One of the guiding principles of the <a title="Go here to watch more about the Harlem Children's Zone." href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMZb-9EKbbY">Harlem Children's Zone (WATCH VIDEO)</a> is to eliminate any break in the action. Middle school years are critical to high school success and graduation from college.LINCOLN AND MORSE AREA 1 CLUSTERThe
 state of the art Lincoln High School (located two blocks from the 
Jackie Robinson Family YMCA), reopened in September of 2007 and is 
currently the only high school in San Diego County without a feeder 
middle school.  Today, students promoted from elementary schools in the Lincoln Cluster are directed to Horace Mann or Memorial Prep. Mann serves as a primary feeder middle school to Crawford High while Memorial does the same for San Diego High.The master plan to build Lincoln's ninth grade included Gompers and O'Farrell Charter Middle Schools. The outstanding performance at both sites has led to each expanding to grades 6-12 campuses. Their enrollments are booming because parents that can walk their kids to these schools prefer this option over a bus trip to Horace Mann near El Cajon Boulevard. Millennial Tech (located on the same location as Gompers) is a magnet school that does not mandate Lincoln as the only high school option.Then, there is the bus. It is estimated over 10,000 students are bused to schools north of I-8 daily from the service area of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA. Those that do, usually start in elementary school and are not returning for middle school (because there is no option) and certainly do not change for high school after years of friendships as a result of the School Choice Programs.All parents, guardians, students, community members,

 loving parents Dan L. Graham and Kristy L. Mckinney in San Diego, 
California. At the young age of 4, he started playing T-Ball at the 
Jackie Robinson YMCA where his passion for sports grew. His early 
education was received at Webster Elementary School.  He attended San Diego School of Creative and 
Performing Arts where he learned one of his numerous talents:  
Photography. During his high school years Courtney attended Crawford 
High School where he played both football and basketball. After 
graduation, Courtney enrolled at Southwestern College where he continued
 to play football, while taking courses in general education and 
computer science.<a title="Courtney Graham Obituary." href="http://preferredcremation.org/obituaries/courtney-graham/"></a>He loved his family, and his pride and joy was his nephew and niece,
 who he introduced to everyone. His humility allowed him to inspire 
others, which is one of the many reasons he got along well with everyone
 both white and black alike. He was a personable, intelligent, and 
motivating young man; who was always “Going Hard” for what he believed 
in and doing so in a positive manner. Courtney or “CoCo” (as he was 
affectionately known by his family) was always curious for the next 
level of technology. This interest allowed him to often make late night 
trips with his best friend Derrick to Borders Bookstore on a quest to 
learn something new.Courtney loved computers and often repaired and helped rebuild them 
for friends and family. He photographed local artists for their album 
covers, created graphics, websites and logos.Courtney had a list of 
ideas beyond measure in his gifted mind.   He possessed an amazing 
entrepreneurial spirit, which he was in the process of unleashing to the
 world, all while drinking his beloved cup of coffee.He was very excited about working at the Comic-Con Convention 
for his second year in addition to his day job at <a title="Courtney worked at Belmont Park in Mission Beach." href="http://www.belmontpark.com/">Belmont Park in Mission Beach</a>.Courtney was preceded in death by his father in 2006 and his mother 
in 2007. He is survived by his Grandmother, Henrietta Ayers; Sister, 
Teariny Ballard; Nephew and Niece, Khristien and Khori Hilliard; Aunts, 
Mary Murrell and Donna Ayers of Memphis,TN; Uncles Walter and Joe Nathan
 Ayers; Cousins, Cheryl, Stacey and Toni Murrell, Christopher, Danielle 
and Nikia Ayers, Maeghan and Tyler-Lynne Murrell.Although his life was brought to an abrupt end, his light will 
continue to shine in all of us.

            <description><![CDATA[I attended the community meeting on Friday night at the Black Contractors Association to discuss the homicide of Courtney Graham one week ago in the Oak Park neighborhood community. Later that evening a prayer vigil was held at the scene of the crime. Larsen's repast attended by most of the Samoan community was held in our gymnasium. Aaron was a student at the Sports &amp; Science Academy located at our Y. Stephen Cleveland and my youngest son Mario played on the same basketball team I coached. I will never forget the day he came to practice announcing "my mother is having triplets!" Monique was a shoo-in to be one of our ten college scholarship recipients at our Jackie Robinson Tribute &amp; Scholarship Gala in 2009. She and Michael had photos at their memorial services proudly posing in Y basketball uniforms or sitting on Santa's lap at our annual Christmas with Character event. Lachanae McAfee led a march and community rally from St. Stephen's Church to our Y in memory of her friends Donnell and Brandon that would earn her the National Conflict Resolution Center Peace Maker Award at an event that gave the same to George McGovern and Bob Dole. And on Friday night, Coach Terry Young reminded me that Courtney has been playing on teams that he and Tony Conwright and Larry Sellers coached at our Y most of his young life.On Friday night, I listened to a lot of of community outrage without saying a word. The most significant message came from Michelle Muhammad the mother of Michael "Mikey" Beckwith. She stood strong in front of Courtney's surviving family and friends and said, "every time something like this happens it tears open our wounds." Her guidance and counsel was from being a survivor of violent loss as she talked about the need for all to improve themselves before thinking anyone can make an impact on a young person involved in taking the life of another human being.Sadly, for so many of these horrific murders the killers are still at large.Whenever I hear the news of a violent crime in our region I can't help but think it probably was not the first time the shooter pulled the trigger, nor will it be the last.             <description><![CDATA[Since arriving in San Diego from Detroit in 1980, I can't recall so many people talking about the weather. If the sun does not come out by 11:00 am it tends to put some folks in a funk. Another topic at the the top of the water cooler discussion board is our San Diego Padres. who aren’t the least bit heroic (in this case someone who basically has 
accomplished nothing other than appearing extremely skilled while

As long as I have been around basketball you can imagine that Michael is not the only one asking.When you consider LeBron James is as old as my youngest son Mario and on December 30 will reach the ripe old age of twenty-six, I think I replied with something that sounded like "this is going to be a pretty big decision for the young man."How many times have we seen big time free agents take the money and run?How many times have we seen the balance of power in sports disrupted under the guise of "I want to win a championship ring?"How many times have we seen a Hall of Fame athlete spend their entire career in one location - especially when they could have received more money somewhere else?Last night, I sat across the table from Marshall Faulk during a planning session with the Third Annual Aztec for Life event scheduled for October 15. Our Y scholarship program will benefit from this Marshall Faulk Foundation signature event along with the SDSU Aztec Athletic Foundation and many more. Next year, Marshall Faulk will be eligible for induction into the NFL Hall of Fame for what he did and still does on and off the field.There is no doubt LeBron James has a spot waiting for him in the NBA Hall of Fame. It is absolutely amazing how he has performed with grace in this age of sensationalism. From a media perspective, when I coached in the NBA (1978-1980) we did not have a cable box with 1,000 stations that need to fill air time. As LeBron grows in years, (26, 27, etc.) I am sure his social responsibility accomplishments beyond the game of basketball will continue to grow. As quiet as it's been kept, all the proceeds from the announcement special tonight on ESPN will benefit the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of America. At twenty-five years old, I think LeBron understands what Jackie Robinson meant when he said "A life is not important except in the impact it has 
on other lives."             <title>Let Independence Day Mean Something</title>

important issue of our time. There's not an American in this country 
free until every one of us is free."Jackie Robinson<a title="Go here for Patrick Henry's speech." href="http://libertyonline.hypermall.com/henry-liberty.html"></a>As the clock runs down on another national holiday this quote by Jackie Robinson remained stuck in my my mind the entire weekend. Maybe it was triggered by Katie Fulhorst's moving opening thought at the San Diego Rotary Club 33 luncheon on Thursday when she delivered Patrick Henry's powerful words spoken March 23, 1775 at St. John's Henrico Parish Church in Richmond, Virginia. Henry's message to the President concluded with <a title="Go here for the entire transcript of Patrick Henry's speech." href="http://libertyonline.hypermall.com/henry-liberty.html">"Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! -- I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"</a>This certainly puts the concept of slavery into an interesting perspective.While Independence was declared on July 4, 1776; for many, slavery's legacy still lingers for generations of American families two-hundred and thirty-four years later. When you consider Jackie Robinson's quote originated sometime between the date he became the first Black to play Major League Baseball on April 15, 1947 and his death on October 24, 1972 it does not seem that long ago.<a title="Go here to read more about Jackie Robinson." target="_self" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/about-us/jackie-robinson.html"></a>The YMCA has long fulfilled it's promise to strengthen the foundations of community by giving back and providing support to our neighbors through social responsibility.             <title>Times like these...</title>

            <description><![CDATA[There once was a time I would be quick to talk about how "busy" I might be until reading a daily devotional from the <a href="http://profile.purposedriven.com/dailyhope/">Purpose Driven Life Connection</a> that said something like "if you are busy, then maybe you need to let something go." Rick Warren discussed that if what we do is part of our purpose, then consider your life full and filled with meaning.Since then I now say things have been very "full" and not the "b" word.Well, you could probably imagine that serving at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA keeps me on a full schedule. Then it's times like last week, when my wife lost a sister and I received news that my brother died tragically back home in Detroit that you can only wonder how full is full?<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVm8jPBhmMU">"It's times like these you learn to live again, it's time like these you give and give again, it's time like these you learn to love again." Foo Fighters</a>So just about the time when you wonder if what you are doing in the game of life is really making a difference, I receive reminders like this message that arrived today that I am spending my heaven doing good on earth every day at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA:Coach, I was 12 years old when I first walked into the Jackie Robinson YMCA. I was nervous to join the Jackie Robinson Monarchs, the 12 and under girls basketball team you coached. Acceptance was not something I had to worry about on the team, or the YMCA. With such a supportive atmosphere, the Jackie Robinson Y quickly became a second home for me. Being a part of the Lady Monarchs opened the door to life changing experiences, lifelong friends, and paved the way for my future basketball career. We journeyed to cities all over California, Connecticut, along with a trip to New York City the summer before 9-11. We even were honored with an official Jackie Robinson YMCA Lady Monarch Day by the San Diego City Council!After playing for the Monarchs for 2 years, I would eventually take my basketball career to the high school level at Mt. Miguel High School. Then continue to the collegiate level playing my freshman year at UCLA and then transferring to San Diego State for the remaining 2 years. I am honored to look back on my achievements as a basketball player while never forgetting where I started. Although my experience in playing basketball definitely contributes to my character, it doesn’t last forever. Aside from basketball, the Jackie Robinson YMCA helped me understand the importance of community. As a team, we were involved in many community service activities. Although I may not be 12 anymore, the memories, lessons, and experiences at the Jackie Robinson YMCA will be instilled in me forever. When I started writing I realized how many things the Y has done for me, 
that I couldn't begin to list all of the life changing experiences. It would have been impossible for me to get where I came from without the YMCA making such a major impact on my life. I made a promise to myself that whenever I get able, I will do what I can to give back to my community. On Friday June 25, 2010 at the Lyceum Theatre in downtown San Diego, my production company, Insatiable Productions, will be hosting the <a href="http://www.i-nsatiable.com/">Passion 4 Fashion Runway Show</a> and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Join a Team Not a Gang Youth Sports Program at the Jackie Robinson YMCA. Though t is important to me to first recognize a problem in the community, it is even more important to make the effort to assist in changing it. I remember being that 12 year old girl walking into the Jackie Robinson YMCA and having dreams to become something great. Now that the family at Jackie Robinson has helped me and will continue to help me become great, it is my turn to help the next child reach their dreams. before leaving on June 2 and hear what sounds like a kitten in hallway 
wall.  After a little operation on the wall - <a target="_parent" href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=177848&amp;id=582912395&amp;l=33ec14b7dc">LOOK WHAT WE FOUND!</a>Tasha Williamson commented, "Making a difference and saving lives is what ya'll do. Awesome job 
again. What did you name the freed rascal?"Well, guess what? I just learned that our Office Manager Desiree LaPointe rescued another kitten from the weight room ceiling last night and this was after receiving a message at 7:45 am that another kitten had just been heard inside the fitness center wall.Yes we do make a difference and save lives!This past week we completed distributing 20,000 $2 voucher tickets to the San Diego County Fair in nine hours. A wait-list is being formed at <a target="_self" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/programs/tickets-for-kids.html">TAKE FIVE Tickets for Kids</a> in case we receive more this week. Last night, 300 members and program participants of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA watched the red-hot San Diego Padres win another come-from-behind game at Petco Park.On Thursday, June 17 we will host 250 School Safety Patrol students from Southeastern San Diego for a special year-end celebration. All of the budget cuts eliminated the traditional resident camp treat for these young leaders. San Diego Police Department Captain Tony McElroy called to see if we could help recognize the youth volunteers from his Southeastern Area Command. The decision was easy for these kids that make a difference and save lives every day. Donations and volunteers are needed and welcome. Family YMCA. This comes not long after <a href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/jun/02/latest-crash-in-n-county-forever-links/">the
 story about another San Diego County teen killed in a car crash</a>. The tragedy adds to the toll of teenagers dying on 
San Diego County roads. 
At least seven in North County have been killed since September in 
accidents involving 
teen drivers. Speed, alcohol, inattention and inexperience have all been
 to blame. Ford will showcase the innovations it is rapidly 
bringing to market, such as the world’s first rear inflatable seat belt 
and <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27053080/">MyKey™</a> which 
allows parents to set speed and radio volume limits to their teen 
drivers’ vehicle. In addition to Ford’s safety technologies displays, 
they will set up the Ford Driving Skills For Life Booth – Ford’s Teen 
Driver Safety Program, as well as invite members of the Safety Council 
to set up booths. Sandy Bauler would also bring out her racecar and sign
 autograph cards that include safe driving information on them. Parents,
 teens, and adults working with teens are encouraged to attend. With high school graduations going on countywide later that day, the timing could not be better.P.S. There's more. Our Jackie Robinson Family YMCA is once again proud to host the <a target="_self" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/programs/track--field.html">Amateur Athletic Union Area 18 National Qualifier Track &amp; Field Championship</a> on Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20 (Father's Day).             <description><![CDATA[Back in 2003, the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA hosted a series of community forums to complete the Community Needs Assessment for our Positioning for the Future Strategic Plan. The YMCA of San Diego County invests a lot into this process every five years, including the most recent Road Map 2010 edition.Each time, when asked, our community response at the distant top of the list was to do anything we can to address the decreased stability and influence of the family.So much of what we do at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA does exactly that.Today, we will begin the community distribution of $2 voucher tickets to the San Diego County Fair. In short, the process is a phenomenon. 20,000 vouchers will be gone in less than forty-eight hours with minimal publicity. Each recipient is limited to taking five tickets - one for themselves and four for kids in an effort to give families an opportunity to do something together when otherwise it might not be affordable.So, every time I get a question like "why are your going through all this effort to distribute free tickets to individuals that might never return until they get something else free?" my reply is "the kids don't drive."68% of the 72,000 households in my YMCA service area earn less than the $49,000 median income for the San Diego region. And I know that 37% of my YMCA households earn under $25,000 a year. There are so many families today that simply cannot afford to take their kids to the Fair or to Petco Park to see the San Diego Padres. The <a target="_self" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/programs/tickets-for-kids.html">TAKE FIVE Tickets for Kids Program</a> is made possible through the generosity of our friends at the San Diego County Fair, the San Diego Padres, the San Diego Chargers, the San Diego State Aztecs, the Old Globe, Mainly Mozart, and the San Diego Sports Arena.When I add up all of the memories provided through this amazing philanthropy it is safe to say for these brief moments families are being stabilized and influenced by spending positive time together.For me, I will never forget my working-three-jobs father loading our family in the station wagon and driving from Detroit to <a href="http://www.zehnders.com/">Frankenmuth, Michigan</a> for an affordable, family-styled fried chicken dinner.             <description><![CDATA[What does Memorial Day mean to you?If you study the <a href="http://www.history.com/topics/memorial-day-history">History of Memorial Day</a> it won't take long to understand this national holiday isn't all about going to the beach, picnics, and the Indianapolis 500. From a YMCA perspective, the <a href="http://www.history.com/topics/memorial-day-history">Armed Services YMCA</a>'s long history dates back to the Civil War when Memorial Day began.As we commemorate those that lost their lives in service to our country lets not forget their survivors who have 365 memorial days every year. There can be no greater loss than that of a loved one. May this Memorial Day be a time to celebrate the lives of the beloved with a prayer that family, friends, and those that served by their side continue living their life in that same spirit of celebration.At the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA we serve military families every day. To a dependent family a deployment is never easy until their love one returns safely.  Jackie Robinson Family YMCA Junior RBI (Revitalizing Baseball in the 
Inner Cities) Program</a> started last Saturday with the San Diego Hall 
of Champions Sports Academy Baseball Clinic for boys &amp; girls ages 5 -
 12. This year's RBI program will feature an opportunity for a select 
team from our 11 - 12 age division to participate in the Junior RBI
