Winning and Losing

Since arriving in San Diego from Detroit in 1980, I can't recall so many people talking about the weather. If the sun does not come out by 11:00 am it tends to put some folks in a funk. Another topic at the the top of the water cooler discussion board is our San Diego Padres. Granted, it's been a while since they lead the NL West at the All-Star break, but going into today's series in Pittsburgh they are 3 games ahead of the Giants, 4.5 ahead of the Rockies, and 5 ahead of the Dodgers.

Speaking of the Dodgers, the Padres made a generous contribution to our TAKE FIVE Tickets for Kids Program to next week's games against the boys in blue on July 27 and 28 and against the Florida Marlins on Friday, July 30. Go here for details!

Only four teams (Yankees: 60, Devil Rays: 57, Rangers: 56, and the Braves: 56) have more wins than the Padres 55 but you would never know it with a lot of talk going around about our home team "only" winning one this week against Atlanta.

As important as winning baseball games might be, I for one can think of a lot of other situations I would rather talk about not losing. Go here to read The Greatest Loss of All.

On Monday night, 25 year old Courtney Graham was shot dead in the Oak Park neighborhood of our YMCA service area. People living in the community described hearing a fusillade of nearly a dozen shots, followed by the sound of several people running away, according to police. There have been no arrests.

Tonight at 6:00 p.m. all are encouraged to attend a meeting to address this homicide at the Black Contractors Association Headquarters located at 6125 Imperial Avenue, San Diego, CA 92114.

I will miss you if you can't attend.
