Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures are teaming up with
director Brian Helgeland for "42," the powerful story of Jackie
Robinson, the legendary baseball player who broke Major League
Baseball's color barrier when he joined the roster of the Brooklyn
Dodgers. "42" will star Academy Award(R) nominee Harrison Ford
("Witness") as the innovative Dodger's general manager Branch Rickey,
the MLB executive who first signed Robinson to the minors and then
helped to bring him up to the show, and Chadwick Boseman ("The Express")
as Jackie Robinson.
"42" will open in theaters on April 12, 2013.
The following evening on April 13, 2013 your Jackie Robinson Family YMCA will host it's 17th Annual Tribute to Jackie Robinson & Scholarship Gala. Needless to say, this year's Tribute is shaping up to be the best ever.
Since "43" (1943), the YMCA has been serving kids and families in San Diego's most critical community. Known as the Southeast YMCA until the mid 70s, during a period of racial unrest the students of Lincoln High School two blocks away led an initiative to honor Jackie by renaming our branch to the Jackie Robinson Memorial YMCA.
If you've been sitting in a movie theater for the past six months watching upcoming preview trailers prior to your feature flick, when "42" appeared on the bigger than life screen - how did you feel? People I know and many I don't have been calling, emailing, and texting wanting to know "Did you know?", "Have you seen?", and a unanimous "I can't wait!" I've heard about "chills", "emotions", and "tears". Imagine if there was ever a time in your life when you've gone to "Jackie Robinson".
This year our Y celebrates it's seventieth anniversary. "43" seems like a long time ago. Our inspired staff and volunteers were laser focused on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility four years before "42" stepped to the plate on April 15, 1947. There is no doubt in my mind that the elders that advanced the Mission of the Y in those early days were equally fixed on how Jackie Robinson turned his success into significance then and today.
I invite you to join us on April 13, 2013 for our 17th Annual Jackie Robinson Tribute & Scholarship Gala. Eleven college-bound high school seniors that live in or go to school in our Y service area will each receive $2,000 scholarships. In addition, proceeds from this very special event support our ability to provide scholarships to families requesting financial assistance for Day Camp, Membership, Swim Lessons, and Youth Sports.
Need we say more? I will miss you if you can't attend!
